I'm Dr. Adrienne Shnier
Apply Yourself began as a passion project back in 2015 when I realized the lack of customized support available for students and young professionals who were submitting applications for various opportunities for aligned advancement - graduate and professional programs, professional promotions, and career transitions.
So there I was working on my Ph.D. dissertation at Starbucks, and applicants started to come to me for strategy and support through their application processes. As an Admissions Committee Member, I knew exactly what they needed.
Average grades, great scores - no problem. Great grades, average scores - no problem. Average grades, average scores - no problem.
I saw that the numbers are part of the consideration, but they are not determinative.
I realized why committees ask for each application requirement, and why. I saw how each application requirement formed a puzzle piece that formed a picture of who the applicant really is. And that's when I realized the true importance of the written work. And then, I saw that the writing for applications is different. It's not your typical research essay writing that we ask for as professors. The personal statements, statements of interest or intent, short answer questions, and more, offer the committee exactly what they need to understand you.
So, I began to help my fellow Starbucks-go-ers.
The rest is history.
I was struck by the lack of guidance in the world of applications. As I applied to medical school, my M.A., Ph.D., and J.D. programs, I hoped for support, advice, and strategy from “consultants,” but was disappointed by the cookie-cutter method and knew there had to be a more customized approach informed by actual experience on admissions committees.
For many of us, the application process can be overwhelming and exhausting if you don’t have the right kind of expertise and support at your fingertips.
My experience-informed system, structure, and strategy will help you develop materials that will allow your admissions committee members to advocate for you when the decision is out of your hands.
